The German expressionist group Die Brücke (The Bridge) was formed in 1905 by architecture students Fritz Bleyl, Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff as a way to link the art of the past with that of the future. Their influences ranged from Albrecht Drer, Matthias Gr newald and Lucas Cranach the Elder, to African and Oceanic art. Together the group, which grew to include Max Pechstein and Otto Mueller, developed a recognisable style that employed vivid colours, distorted shapes and psychological tension. The show includes more than 100 paintings, sculptures and works on paper, and is organised by Reinhold Heller. The Neue Galerie is the sole venue for this exhibition. [+] READ MORE
